Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed to 105-115°F
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 2 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and diced into ¼-inch pieces
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon lemon juice
  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 12 tablespoons whole milk

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix warm milk, yeast, and sugar; let it foam for 5-10 minutes. Add melted butter, egg, and salt, then gradually incorporate flour until a shaggy dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled (1-1.5 hours).
  2. For the apple filling, melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook diced apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice for 8-10 minutes until tender. Cool completely.
  3. Roll out dough into a rectangle. Spread softened butter on the dough and sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar mixture. Add cooled apple filling and roll tightly into a log.
  4. Cut into 12 slices and place in a greased baking pan. Let rise again for 30-45 minutes while preheating the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  5. For frosting, beat together softened cream cheese and butter; gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth. Drizzle over warm rolls before serving.
